The River Road and
Wharton’s Advance Walking Trail
The New Market Battlefield Visitor Center and Museum is located on Manor’s Hill which was the site of fighting the night before and during the Battle of New Market. The property features part of the Historic River Road, a prominent battlefield feature where Union soldiers were positioned on the morning of May 15, 1864. After Confederates pushed the Federals north, they used the River Road as a staging ground for their next advance and made adjustments to their lines with Confederate Gen. Gabriel Wharton shifting his men further west into Indian Hollow, the depression behind where the museum sits today, to help protect them from Union artillery fire. Today you can walk the trail that follows the advance of the 51st Virginia Infantry and the 26th Virginia Battalion. Along the trail you will find interpretive markers and the Virginia monument. The trail runs one-way approximately 1/2 a mile north. A small parking lot is located north of the museum along George Collins Pkwy where you can pick up the trail in the middle.
