Nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, the town of New Market, Virginia is a peaceful, pastoral landscape much like it was in 1864. It was here that the armies of Union Gen. Franz Sigel and Confederate Gen. John C. Breckinridge met in battle on May 15th of that year. This Confederate victory remains strong in memory due to the participation of the VMI Corps of Cadets.

The New Market Civil War Audio Tour and Mobile App is our official mobile app for exploring the unique Civil War history and the battlefield of New Market, Virginia. New Market was a bustling little town at the time of the Civil War and vestiges of its history exist on nearly every corner. On May 15. 1864, the townspeople found themselves caught in the middle of a full-fledged battle when Confederates under Gen. John C. Breckinridge attacked and defeated a Union force under Gen. Franz Sigel. Famous today because of the participation of the Cadets from Virginia Military Institute, the compelling stories of soldiers and civilians alike are featured in the audio tour along with audio narration, maps, directions, and visitor information.

Begin your battlefield visit here with information and exhibits on the Battle of New Market and how to tour the battlefield. A trail system begins on site that follows the Confederate advance as they drove the Union army from the town during the May 15, 1864, battle. This trail includes interpretive markers and the Virginia Monument. The museum showcases military artifacts from the French and Indian War to Vietnam with an extensive focus on the Civil War. Included within the Museum is the Wellford Gallery of Confederate Art. This priceless collection, on loan from the historic Westmoreland Club of Richmond, contains original 19th century works featuring damed Confederate leaders - including the painting of Jefferson Davis that Mrs. Davis declared was the best portrait of him ever completed. Shop at the museum store which features books, relics, souvenirs, and visitor information on New Market and other surrounding battlefields in the region. The site is owned by the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation.

Located in the center of the Town of New Market, the Strayer House was used as a headquarters by Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson and Gen. Jubal Early. Today the site has information on the Battle of New Market and how to visit the battlefield. The space is shared with Jackson’s Corner Cafe, a great place to stop for breakfast or lunch featuring sandwiches, soups, baked goods, and coffee. A small gift shop has books and souvenirs for the battlefield and surrounding sites. The site is preserved by the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation and serves as their main office.

Located on part of the battlefield, the museum provides opportunities to reflect upon the Battle of New Market which raged just outside on May 15, 1864. In addition to museum exhibit galleries, the site features the state-certified Shenandoah Valley Tourist Information Center, an Emmy-winning film, Field of Lost Shoes shown every hour. The site is owned and operated by the Virginia Military Institute.
