The James R. Wilkins
Winchester Battlefields Visitor Center
The James R. Wilkins Winchester Battlefields Visitor Center is the main orientation site for the Civil War in Winchester and a great place to start your visitor experience in town. It provides information about all of Winchester’s battlefields and related Civil War sites. Located at the Third Winchester Battlefield Park, the visitor center features interpretive exhibits and orientation films that tell the story of Winchester’s rich Civil War history. The site includes a gift shop with books, souvenirs, and restroom facilities.
The Third Winchester Battlefield Park is composed of more than 600 acres of preserved land. The Third Battle of Winchester, fought on September 19, 1864, was the largest and costliest battle ever fought in the Shenandoah Valley. More than 54,000 men fought and over 8,600 became casualties in a ferocious see-saw struggle that saw the Confederates gradually forced back until a final defensive attack by Union infantry and cavalry struck their left flank, breaching their lines, and sending them “whirling through Winchester”.
The park includes over 6 miles of walking trails, monuments, and more than 30 interpretive markers that tell the story of that fateful day.
