Today you can still view much of the landscape as it was seen by soldiers and civilians during the war, and explore the region's dramatic Civil War story at historic sites, battlefields, courthouses, cemeteries, walking trails, and museums that reveal how the war reshaped the Valley.

About the National Historic District

In 1996, Congress designated eight Virginia counties as the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District, preserving and interpreting the region’s Civil War battlefields and historic sites.

The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation works with local partners to protect these places, share their stories, and welcome visitors to the Valley.
