The Opportunity
Expand and strengthen the National Historic District
The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District Boundary Expansion and Partnership Act of 2026 would add Rockbridge County, Virginia, and Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan Counties, West Virginia, bringing more of the Valley's nationally significant Civil War landscapes into the District's partnership network.

The expanded boundary would connect key Virginia and West Virginia communities through one regional partnership.

Sustain preservation and interpretation
It would preserve access to National Heritage Area grants and technical assistance while authorizing continued support for preservation, interpretation, visitor facilities, and battlefield park operations.

What the Bill Would Authorize
$1.25 million annually beginning in fiscal year 2027 for management and site operations, plus $2.5 million annually through fiscal year 2033 for grants, technical assistance, and voluntary land acquisition from willing sellers.
