165 Acres Saved at Second Winchester Battlefield
Historic Yonley Farm Protected Forever – A Landmark Preservation Victory for the Winchester Area
WINCHESTER, Virginia — The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation proudly announces the permanent preservation of 165 acres of core battlefield where a key part of the Second Battle of Winchester was fought on June 14, 1863. This site, then owned by the Yonley family, witnessed some of the most intense and consequential fighting of the battle, where Confederate forces under General Richard Ewell launched a surprise attack that helped to open the road to Pennsylvania.
The newly protected property includes ground where Jubal Early’s troops stormed Federal positions, including the famed Louisiana Tigers who charged West Fort and Battery #6. The cannon fire was so loud it was heard 20 miles away. These 165 acres represent the heart of the battlefield landscape critical to understanding the events that shaped the path to the Battle of Gettysburg just weeks later.
“This is an extraordinary achievement,” said Keven Walker, CEO of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation. “Second Winchester was pivotal in Lee’s invasion of Pennsylvania, and now, thanks to the generosity of Diane Kearns, this land will be protected forever.”
The preservation was made possible by Diane Kearns, current owner and third-generation steward of the property, who donated a conservation easement. This gift ensures the land will remain preserved forever and opens the door for public access to a new section of the Second Winchester Battlefield.
“This project is a game-changer for Winchester and Frederick County,” Walker added. “It safeguards open space, preserves our rural character, and creates opportunities for heritage tourism that will benefit the local economy for generations.”
“I am thrilled that this has come to fruition,” said Kearns. “It is a tribute to my father and aligns perfectly with my wishes that this area be preserved and tell the stories that connect it to the Civil War, but also the apple industry.”
The Yonley Farm preservation strengthens the Foundation’s mission to protect, interpret, and share the Shenandoah Valley’s Civil War story, including the properties connection to the Shenandoah Valley’s rich apple history, while enhancing quality of life for residents through green space, scenic vistas, and educational opportunities.
The planned Second Winchester Battlefield is a part of the Battlefields Foundation’s Tourism Infrastructure Plan, which includes walking trails, interpretive signage, and wayfinding improvements. New signage has already been installed at the Star Fort Battlefield Site and Third Winchester Battlefield Park as part of this plan, helping visitors understand the area's historical significance.
