About the Author

Dr. Brandon H. Beck is retired professor emeritus of Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. He taught History there from 1983 until he retired in 2006. His friendship with Hugh D. McCormick, and Hugh’s generosity, led to the foundation of the McCormick Civil War Institute at the University. Beck was its first director. The work of the Institute, together with his own writing, helped lay the foundation for Civil War studies in the Shenandoah Valley. He earlier published two guidebooks to the three battles of Winchester and single volumes on each battle.

He is the author of 10 books on the Civil War. His research on the Third Battle of Winchester led him to the previously unpublished memoir of Alabama General Cullen A. Battle which resulted in Third Alabama!: The Civil War Memoir of Brigadier General Cullen Andrews Battle, CSA, which appeared in 2000.

Since retiring, Beck has written three books on Confederate cavalry operations in Mississippi and Alabama. His most recent book, Streight’s Foiled Raid on the Western and Atlantic Railroad, was released in early 2016. He lives in Columbus, Mississippi.
