Third Winchester: The Battle and the Aftermath – Nick Picerno

This program by SVBF Board Chairman Nicholas Picerno will look at the Third Battle of Winchester (September 19, 1864) on both the large scale and the small scale, focusing on the pivotal action in the Middle Field that decided the outcome and the stories of the individual soldiers caught up in the fury.  It will also examine the aftermath of the battle, then and now, from its impact on the war then to the efforts to save the hallowed ground in the years since. Nick, who is retired Chief of Police at Bridgewater College, is serving his second term as Chairman of the SVBF Board of Trustees. A noted historian, especially on the 1864 Campaign in the Valley, Nick serves on the Federal Advisory Commission at the Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historic Park. He also sits on the Boards of the Lee-Jackson Educational Foundation and is a previous trustee of the Museum of the Confederacy.
