About the Program
Dr. Rutherford’s program will highlight how landmine development and tactics evolved with their widespread use in the Civil War – and how an alliance of Confederate professionally-trained soldiers, ill-equipped home guard units, businessmen and Masons succeeded in furthering landmine warfare.
About the Speaker
Dr. Kenneth R. Rutherford is author of America’s Buried History: Landmines in the Civil War (Savas Beatie, April 2020). He is a trustee of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation and a Professor of Political Science at James Madison University. After losing his legs to a landmine in Somalia, he became a leader in the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which was awarded the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize.
