Fridays at the Front – “We Would Not Have Been Caught in This Trap”: The Battle of Harper’s Ferry
July 30 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pmFree
A tour of sites related to the Battle of Harper’s Ferry (fought on September 12-15, 1862), where Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson used the surrounding heights to besiege and capture the Union garrison – the largest surrender of U.S. Troops before World War II. Jackson’s victory secured the strategic location and allowed his troops to join Gen. Robert E. Lee in time for the Battle of Antietam. Seeing Jackson as he entered the town, one captured Federal remarked, “Boy, he is not much for looks, but if he had been in command we would not have been caught in this trap.”
