The original portion of the building was constructed circa 1808 for John Strayer’s home and mercantile business, and was visited by historic figures such as Stonewall Jackson and witness to events such as the Battle of New Market.

The Foundation’s offices are located on the second floor of the building, but the first floor is  highlighted by a Civil War Orientation Center, Jackson’s Corner Cafe, a small gift shop and a visitor information desk.  The orientation center  helps visitors understand the Civil War history of the Valley and then direct them to the sites where they can explore that history today.

The Strayer House is located at the intersection of US11 and US211 in the middle of downtown New Market. Public parking is at the back of the building, on the west side. Office hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. You can enter directly from the parking lot to the basement level (go up one flight of stairs to the future orientation area, two flights to our offices), or walk around and enter through the front of the building, which opens onto a short flight of steps onto the first floor.
