Civil War Trails sign on Confederate Maryland troops vs. Union Maryland Troops, house to house fighting, and civilian reaction.

As fighting grew hot in and around the town of Front Royal, the 1st Maryland Confederates engaged the 1st Maryland Union forces near the Warren County Courthouse.  Federal troops positioned themselves around the town and in the upper stories of taller buildings, the Confederate Hospital in town among others.  As the Confederate forces overtook the town, house to house fighting took place between them and the fleeing Union forces.  As the battle continued, enthusiastic townspeople cheered and greeted their “liberators”, despite the dangers surrounding the area.
