Civil War Trails sign on diarist Lucy Buck’s story of a visit to her home by General Robert E. Lee as army withdrew southward.

Built in 1795, Bel Air was home to the Buck Family at the time of the Civil War.  Lucy, the Daughter of William and Elizabeth Buck, was an avid diarist and her accounts of what she saw during the Civil War provide insight into the civilian experience of the war.  On July 22, 1863, during the retreat from Gettysburg, General Robert E. Lee accepted an invitation by Lucy’s Father for refreshments at the Buck home.  Lucy’s account of the experience and the singing of songs for the General at her home provide a glimpse into the awed view so many had of General Lee.
