Civil War Trails signs on how the Confederate victory prevented Union troops from encircling Jubal Early after the Battle of Fishers Hill.
Following his defeat at Fisher’s Hill, Confederate General Jubal Early sent his Calvary south to cover his route of escape. After a series of delaying engagements, the Confederates burned the Overall Run Bridge and dug in on the south bank. Despite being outnumbered two to one, heavy Federal Artillery fire on their position and a flank attack from the east, the Confederates repulsed the Union attack. This allowed Early to continue his retreat southward and prevented the capture or destruction of his army.
