Civil War Trails sign at this state site describes how some of Union General David Hunter’s troops detoured to see the famous attraction on their march from Lexington to Lynchburg.
Following their attack on Lexington, Virginia, Union General David Hunter marched his men towards Lynchburg, Virginia. Along the way, many of them hoped to see Virginia’s famous landmark of the Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County. A great many were disappointed that they would come no closer than three miles to the site. Following the repulse of Hunter’s forces from Lynchburg, the pursuing Confederates also took some time to view one of the Nation’s first tourist attractions.
