Civil War Trails sign and monument at the location where General Turner Ashby was killed on June 6, 1862.

Serving and General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s rear guard on June 6, 1862, General Turner Ashby engaged the advancements of Union General John C. Fremont’s Calvary at this site on Chestnut Ridge in Harrisonburg, Virginia.  Ashby’s horse was shot out from under him and preceded to lead a charge on foot.  At this time, he was shot through the side and it passed through his chest, killing him instantly.
