Civil War Trails sign about the death of U.S. Quartermaster General Montgomery Meigs’ son, Lt. John Meigs at this site.

On this site on October 3, 1864, Lieutenant John Meigs was killed in a brief encounter with Confederate Scouts who had crossed Union lines to gather intelligence on the positions of General Phillip H. Sheridan’s forces in the area.  Meigs, who was on Sheridan’s staff at the time, was a West Point graduate and the son of the Quartermaster General of the United States, Montgomery Meigs.  Lt. Meigs would be buried by his Father in the rose garden at Arlington House, which had formally been the land of General and Mrs. Robert E. Lee.
