Civil War Trails sign interpreting the Confederate partisan unit led by John Hanson McNeill, who died at this location in 1864.

Captain John H. McNeill formed a partisan unit of Rangers that entered into General John Imboden’s command as part of the 18th Virginia Cavalry.  McNeill and his Rangers attacked Federal camps, raided railroads and seized Union supplies.  On October 3, 1864, McNeill and his men attacked Federal troops at Mt. Jackson located north of Harrisonburg in the Shenandoah Valley.  McNeill was seriously wounded in the attack and was moved from a local Mt. Jackson residence to Hill’s Hotel in Harrisonburg, where he died on November 10, 1864.  The Hotel stood at the corner of Main and Water Streets.
