Civil War Trails sign on Walker’s flank attack during the Battle of Cross Keys.
During the afternoon of May 8, 1862, Col. James A. Walker’s Confederate demi-brigade reinforced Gen. Isaac R. Trimble’s men who were engaged at Cross Keys with Union forces. Walker attempted to flank the Union forces engaged with Trimble by marching along the Goods Mill Rd. around the Confederate right flank. The flanking maneuver would not be successful yet the Confederates were able to push Union forces commanded by General Louis Blenker to retreat after fierce fighting and the removal of Union artillery by its commander.
