Civil War Trails sign on the Town of Monterey and its experience during the war.

Monterey served as a Confederate headquarters during the 1861 Campaign and for the Federal forces in the weeks leading up to the Battle of McDowell in 1862.  The town did not take an oath of allegiance for the Confederacy until after the Battle of McDowell and Union forces were pushed back towards Franklin.
