On September 19, 1864, Confederate Gen. Jubal A. Early’s Army of the Valley and Union Gen. Philip H. Sheridan’s Army of the Shenandoah met at the Third Battle of Winchester, one of the pivotal clashes of the Civil War.
“For a time the two lines were so near each other that the paper of their cartridges flew into our faces.”
