Do you believe in miracles?
This is the time of year when many of us take a moment out of our busy lives to contemplate that question. This is the season of miracles – the season of holidays that celebrate the impossible becoming the possible. Whether it’s Thanksgiving and remembering the unlikely survival of the pilgrims; the day’s supply of oil that somehow burned for eight days in the Hanukkah story; or the story of a savior being born in a manger; this time of year is all about miracles, miracles big and small in each of our lives.
“A cavalryman came down our line telling the men they were flanked…I have often regretted I did not shoot him.” -Confederate Capt. Samuel D. Buck
As we approach the end of the year I’m reminded of the unlikely string of battlefield preservation successes that we’ve had together here in the Shenandoah Valley. Over 4,600 acres have been saved against heavy odds, with very limited resources – and often just before being lost forever. Each acre has been a small miracle, and a testament to your commitment and the commitment of others like you who have joined our fight to save battlefields.
Now I need your help again, I know you have a great deal going on at this time of year but we must quickly raise the funds needed to preserve 177 acres of the Fisher’s Hill Battlefield.
This is a relatively complicated project to save two separate properties that absolutely have to be preserved and it’s going to take more than a million dollars to get it done.
Adjacent to each other – these properties are in the center of the battlefield and, if protected, will save a 67 acre parcel in the middle of the Confederate line where Pegram’s division held tenaciously to the high ground above Tumbling Run and 110 acres that include most of the historic hamlet of Fisher’s Hill.
We are now at a point where without your help the ground just might not be saved, so I’m looking to you.
Our army of supporters have always worked miracles of battlefield preservation here in the Valley. I need you to be a miracle worker once again and help in raising the $1,160,000 that it is going to take to save this hallowed ground at Fisher’s Hill.
Please join us in the Fisher’s Hill fight, by sending what you can to save these 177 acres of core battlefield, and by remembering us when making your year-end contributions. We can win this battle of Fisher’s Hill and save this critical battlefield land. But you can’t leave it to someone else – you have to do it. Without you it won’t happen.
Thank you for all that you have already done and for considering – once again – my request for help. We can do this – if you join the fight!
