Frederick County and City of Winchester 05/25/1862
Preservation National Park

One of the Valley's few urban battlefields, the landscape and terrain have been altered beyond recognition since the period of significance.

Terrain features such as Bowers Hill (now the site of Handley High School) and Abrams Creek remain and provide modest interpretive opportunities.

Significance

As a result of Gen. Bank’s defeat, President Abraham Lincoln feared for the safety of Washington D.C. and withheld Gen. Irvin McDowell’s corps from joining the Federal operation against Richmond, the Confederate capitol.
