“Franz Sigel: A Complicated Man For His Times” – Col. Troy Marshall

General Franz Sigel today is a frequently forgotten Union commander from the American Civil War, but like any good story there are many facets and controversies to the man. From his status as a German expatriate, to later as a doomed Union commander at the Battle of New Market, his career continues to be studied by historians to reveal the man beneath the history.

Speaker Col. Troy Marshall is an alumnus of the College of William and Mary and a graduate of the University of Oklahoma. He is a veteran of the United States Coast Guard, and has worked in museums for twenty-five years at sites such as the Museum of the Confederacy, Sherwood Forest Plantation, Shirley Plantation, and Pamplin Historical Park. Troy has presented hundreds of programs to park visitors during his career. He currently serves as the Director of the Virginia Museum of the Civil War in New Market, VA, and part of the Virginia Military Institute Museum System. He attended the American Association for State and Local History’s Seminar for Historical Administration in 2008 and is an active supporter of the Virginia Association of Museums, and museum advocacy around the world. He grew up on the battlefields of Petersburg, VA and gained a real appreciation for Civil War history and battlefield preservation there. He has a passion for hiking, camping, Civil War living history events, and resides in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley with his wife Samantha, and 13-year old son Nate.
