“After Appomattox: Ending the War in the Valley” – Caroline E. Janney
Caroline E. Janney, Director of the NAU Center for Civil War History at UVA, co-editor of the UNC Press Civil War America Series, and past-President of the Society of Civil War Historians will present “After Appomattox: Ending the War in the Valley.” In the years since 1865, Appomattox became a shorthand for the swift and magnanimous close to a bloody war. But new research suggests that a significant portion of Lee’s army was not surrendered at that small village on April 9, 1865. Dr. Janney will address the ways in which the Shenandoah Valley proved pivotal even in the months after Appomattox to bring the war to a close. A specialist in the Civil War era, she is the author of Burying the Dead but Not the Past: Ladies’ Memorial Associations and the Lost Cause and Remembering the Civil War: Reunion and the Limits of Reconciliation.
