“Digging Up History:  Uncovering Facts About Daily Life During the Civil War” – Courtney Soling Smith

Rockbridge Civil War Roundtable. Courtney Soling Smith, teacher, historian, playwright, and author will present “Digging Up History: Uncovering Facts About Daily Life During the Civil War.” The program will highlight the extensive research she did for her book, Lies: Based on True Stories. It involves a hostage situation that occurred when David Hunter and his troops were headquartered at Greenbrier County’s Hotel. Courtney will explore what life was like for a young middle class homemaker whose husband was a soldier, a socialite sister, a nine year-old girl, a sickly middle-aged woman, a Union spy, a Harvard-trained surgeon, and an elderly former slave all caught up in Hunter’s Raid.
