Cross Keys and Port Republic: 155th Anniversary Programs

Commemorative events for the 155th anniversary of the Battles of Cross Keys and Port Republic. Events include National Park Service ranger-led car caravan tours and programs, living history, kids’ activities, torch light tours and more. Co-sponsored by the National Park Service, Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, Port Republic Museum and the Town of Port Republic.  (Please note:  the address given below is for the museum, but events will be held around the village.)

Friday, June 9, 2017
6:30 p.m. – 1862 in a Box NPS Program (on the “Green” in Port Republic) Program lasts about 40- 45 minutes.
7:45 p.m. – “Torchlight Tour” – meet on the “Green” in Port Republic. Scenario is the evening of June 8, 1862. Tour will last approximately 1 1/2 hours.

Saturday, June 10, 2017
9:00 a.m. – Event begins, with Union and Confederate camps open for visitation; kids’ activities tent.
9:30 – Tour of the Cross Keys Battlefield. Meet at the Union Church on Battlefield Road (Route 679). NPS tour will last approximately two hours.
10:00 – 1862 in a Box NPS program. Program lasts about 40-45 minutes. Meet on the “Green” in Port Republic.
11:00 – Drill demonstration by one of the “living history” groups. Demonstration will last about 45 minutes. On the “Green” in Port Republic.
1:00 – Drill demonstration by one of the “living history” groups. Demonstration will last about 45 minutes. On the “Green” in Port Republic.
2:00 – Tour of the Port Republic Battlefield. Meet on the “Green” in Port Republic. NPS tour will last approximately two hours.
2:30 – 1862 in a Box NPS program. Program last about 40 – 45 minutes. Meet on the “Green” in Port Republic.
3:00 – Final drill demonstration of the day. Demonstration will last about 45 minutes. On the “Green” in Port Republic.
5:00 – Event ends

On-going activities:
– Kids’ activities in the large tent on the “Green.” (Art activities; toy soldiers; putting on Civil War uniform items; learning some Civil War drill; special event scavenger hunt)
– Life of the Civil War soldier talks/demonstrations at the Union and Confederate camps, located along the South River in Port Republic.
– Port Republic Museum will be open all day. Museum includes Turner Ashby Room.
