The Fort Collier Civil War Center is hosting a “Barbecue & Bluegrass” fundraiser from 1:00-5:00 PM on Saturday, October 10th at historic Fort Collier. Attendees will enjoy a barbecue dinner and a bluegrass concert featuring The Beauregards and Circa Blue. All proceeds benefit the restoration of the historic Millbank House.
Located on the Berryville Pike east of Winchester, the Millbank House was a landmark during the Civil War’s Third Battle of Winchester. After the battle, the house and grounds served as a field hospital for soldiers injured during the fighting. The Winchester-Frederick Service Authority gifted the property to Fort Collier Civil War Center in 2014. The organization is now seeking funds to stabilize and restore the historic structure.
“Millbank House stood vacant for many years, so there are many needed repairs,” says Katherine Solenberger, president of the Fort Collier group. “This fundraiser will help raise emergency funds desperately needed now to prevent the house from deteriorating further.” Major issues include water leaks, damaged brickwork, a missing porch, and a large tree growing out of the kitchen chimney.
The severley damaged roof is the gravest threat currently facing the house. Fort Collier has received a pledge of assistance from the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation (SVBF) to repair and stabilize the problem. “Third Winchester was the largest battle in the Valley during the war,” said Keven Walker, executive director of SVBF. “We felt it was important to help preserve this piece of its history.”
