New Market Visitor Information
The 1864 Battle of New Market has a unique place in American history–here young cadets of the Virginia Military Institute fought alongside their adult compatriots in the Confederate forces commanded by General John Breckinridge, a former Vice President of the United States. He used the young cadets only as a last resort, saying: “Put the boys in... and may God forgive me for the order.”
Today, one of the most well-established Civil War museums in Virginia interprets this story. Nestled at the center of the 300-acre New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, the Hall of Valor Museum features an Emmy Award-winning film about the battle as well as exhibits which tell the story of the Civil War in Virginia. Together with the 19th-century Bushong Farmstead and battlefield walking trails, the site is a premier Civil War.
