Sesquicentennial Info
150 years ago, this nation was torn in two by the American Civil War. Today, during the Sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) commemoration, sites across the across the country – most especially Virginia – are presenting events and programs that illuminate the history of those days in meaningful ways…ways that take you back in time and blow the dust off of history to make it as immediate as yesterday’s news.
Nowhere is that more true than in the Shenandoah Valley. Blessed with an especially rich history to tell, and “you-are-there” historic places to tell it, sites throughout the Valley are presenting a wealth of exciting anniversary programs, including living history programs, reenactments, tours, conferences, education programs, youth programs, exhibits, and more.
Follow along with “150 Years Ago Today” feature on our home page. Explore the history of the war on the “History” section of this site, and the historic sites you can visit on the “Visit the Valley” section. Keep up with Sesquicentennial programs by checking the events calendar on this website, subscribing to our monthly e-newsletter (see "Follow Us" to the right), by returning here – and by exploring the sections below.
We hope you’ll join us for this epic journey into our nation’s shared past.
