2014 Programs - 1864 in the Valley

“The World on Fire": The Shenandoah Valley in 1864

Events, Tours, and Programs Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War in the Valley in 1864

In 1864, the Civil War returned to the Shenandoah Valley with a vengeance.

From the first major clash at New Market on May 15, to the final dramatic battle at Cedar Creek on October 19, the Valley saw almost constant combat.  But the year also saw a new level of systematic destruction of the agricultural resources of the Valley during the Burning, and increasingly bitter partisan and irregular warfare.

The stories of 1864 in the Valley are some of the most famed of the Civil War, from the charge of the VMI cadets at New Market, the burning of VMI itself, and Jubal Early’s audacious drive down the Valley to the gates of Washington – to the “Basin of Hell” at Third Winchester, the horror as the Valley’s civilians saw their world set on fire, and Philip Sheridan’s dramatic ride to turn the tide at Cedar Creek.

By the end of the year, the war in the Valley – and the world – had changed forever.  Union victories in the Shenandoah had played a critical role in Abraham Lincoln’s reelection, the rich farmlands of the Valley had been devastated, and Confederate control of the Shenandoah was at an end.

In 2014, sites throughout the Shenandoah Valley will commemorate the 150th anniversary of that year with a series of engaging and enlightening programs that will allow you to walk in history’s footsteps, at the actual battlefields and sites where the pivotal events took place.  Make your plans now to be part of this series of events.
