Preservation Planning
Battlefield protection is especially successful when communities have determined that preserving their historic landscapes is an important priority.
In 2003 and 2005, the Battlefields Foundation worked with landowners at four battlefields in Rockingham and Shenandoah counties to determine if and how they wanted to see their land protected.
The two plans – the Cross Keys and Port Republic Battlefields Preservation Plan and the Fisher’s Hill and Tom’s Brook Battlefields Preservation Plan – are the result of dozens of meetings with landowner steering committees, who determined that decisive steps should be taken to protect the farms, battlefields, and rural character of their lands. Both plans include action agendas that call for a combination of conservation easement and fee simple land acquisition, good local land use planning, and measures to support the local farm economy to protect the battlefields.
Most importantly, as a result of both planning processes, battlefield landowners approached the Foundation about protecting their properties, leading to the preservation of more than 650 acres of land at these four battlefields.
Funding for the two plans was provided through project grants from the American Battlefield Protection Program.
