Reenactment of the Battle of McDowell

A reenactment of the May 8, 1862 battle is the feature event of McDowell Battlefield Day, a 150th Anniversary Living History and Reenactment event in the historic village of McDowell. Activities include horse drawn wagon tours of Union and Confederate camps, military and civilian scenarios, guest speakers, Civil War medicine, and more.

Horse-drawn wagon tours through McDowell, to the Confederate camp, and to the Federal artillery leave regularly from designated locations. Tickets available at the McDowell Presbyterian Church yard and at the Highland County Museum.

Be sure to see the Living History presentations occurring all day at the McDowell Presbyterian Church, at the Highland County Museum, and throughout the village of McDowell.

Saturday, May 5

9 am:  Event opens to the public
11 am: Troops begin to deploy for battle reenactment
1 pm: Battle of McDowell Reenactment begins
2 pm: Federal troops evacuate town, Confederates enter town
5:30 pm:  Reenactment closed to general public
7 pm until dark: Outdoor square dance across from the McDowell United Methodist Church.  Music by the Shenandoah Valley Minstrels

Sunday, May 6 

11:15 am:  Period (1862) Church Service at the McDowell United Methodist Church. ALL VISITORS WELCOME!!

Throughout the day, both days:

-- Exhibition and sale of traditional handicrafts
-- Continuous scenarios and first-person presentations throughout town
-- Guest speakers at the McDowell Presbyterian Church
-- Civilian docent / interpreters available at the Highland County Museum to explain events in third person
-- Refreshments at the McDowell Volunteer Fire Department and elsewhere through town
-- Horse-drawn wagon tours
