148th Anniversary Reenactment of the Battle of New Market

Saturday May 19 - Sunday May 20, 2012

148th Anniversary Reenactment of the Battle of New Market, fought May 15, 1864. Emphasis on the role of the Virginia Military Institute Cadets in the battle. Combat scenarios each day, other living history presentations throughout the weekend. Saturday tactical battle scenario commemorates the First Battle of Winchester, fought May 25, 1862. Nearly 2,000 Confederate, Union, & civilian reenactors. Features 300-acre battlefield, newly rebranded Virginia Museum of the Civil War, restored Bushong Farm. Museum has exhibits on Battle of New Market and Civil War in Virginia-artifacts, dioramas, photos. Emmy Award-winning film, "Field of Lost Shoes," shown daily every hour. The oldest annual battle reenactment in the nation, this is a unique historical experience taking place on the original 1864 battlefield.  Visit on-going demonstrations and living history presentations prior to and after the battle each day. Travel back in history to the sights and sounds of the Civil War with Signal Corps, Artillery, Cavalry, Musket firing, Camp life, Medical Corps, and much more.  Also featured living history presentations on the farm, a period church service on Sunday, a signal corps and artillery demonstrations, and opportunities throughout the weekend to walk through the camps and interact with reenactors.
