Lincoln Birthday Ceremony at Lincoln Cemetery

Sunday February 12, 2012

Annual outdoor ceremony on Lincoln's birthday, featuring remarks by Dr. Phil Stone, President of the Lincoln Society of Virginia, held at the Lincoln Cemetery on the Lincoln Homestead.  The homestead and cemetery are located on Route 42, six miles north of Harrisonburg.  Parking is along a field, and a walk is required to reach the cemetery, which is to the left of the home, up the hill under a large oak tree.  The event will be held regardless of the weather.

The Lincoln Homestead was originally the residence of Jacob Lincoln, brother of President Lincoln's grandfather.  Captain Jacob was a Revolutionary War militia captain, and ancestor of dozens of Lincolns who lived in the Shenandoah Valley.  The substantial brick home, built c. 1800, was occupied by Jacob Lincoln's descendants during the Civil War.  Not only were those Virginia Lincolns partisan Confederates; they were slave owners.  In the Lincoln Family Cemetery, the last of the Lincoln slaves are buried with five generations of Lincolns, including Captain Jacob Lincoln and President Lincoln's great-grandparents
