Dr. Clarence Geier will speak to the Shenandoah Valley Civil War Roundtable on the place of historical archaeology on the analysis and interpretation of Civil War battlefields.
Dr. Geier graduated with a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He has been teaching at JMU since 1975. He is currently emeritus but still teaches on a part-time basis. Since 2000 he has worked primarily on Civil War battlefields including Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Third Winchester and Cedar Creek. He has been the senior editor of five books on historical archaeology and military sites; the most recent was released by the University of Florida Press in late April. Dr Geier in his address to the Roundtable will concentrate on the battlefields of Cedar Creek and Fishers Hill.
