Defeated, but not… Demoralized: The First Battle of Kernstown
Friday October 26, 2012
In early March 1862 Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston directed Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson to do everything in his power to create a strategic diversion in the Shenandoah Valley and prevent Federal forces from leaving the Valley to reinforce Union Gen. George B. McClellan's operations against Richmond. Armed with faulty intelligence about the size of Union forces commanded by Gen. James Shields around Winchester Jackson attacked his counterpart on March 23, 1862, at Kernstown-a place which marked Jackson's only tactical defeat during the conflict, but ended up serving the purposes of a strategic success. This one day seminar and tour will examine the days and decisions leading up to the first great battle in the Shenandoah Valley, the battle which marked the beginning of Stonewall Jackson's remarkable 1862 Valley Campaign. A morning lecture about military operations in the lower Shenandoah Valley in early March 1862 will set the stage for the afternoon tour of sites associated with the opening battle of Jackson's Valley Campaign. The fee covers the cost of the lecture, all handouts, and tour. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited. Participants are advised that the battlefield tour involves some moderate hiking over uneven terrain. Carpooling for the tour is required and participants need to provide their own lunch.
